Navy Yard looks lovely this morning (as seen on my way to pick up breakfast tacos, haha). These trees have grown SO MUCH since B and I moved to this neighborhood in 2013. It’s not our specific neighborhood anymore, but it’s so close and will always feel a little like home.

When we moved to Navy Yard in 2013, this “park” only had scrawny little sapling trees, and the neighborhood wasn’t yet busy enough to truly sustain a restaurant in that little building to the right. Now the neighborhood has grown by leaps and bounds, the building is home to a pizza AND gelato shop, and it has a gorgeous tree canopy that has really come to life.

I’ve loved this little tiled mosaic in Navy Yard for years. I finally did some research and figured out this memorial is for someone named Diamond Teague, a teenager who made a big difference working for the Earth Conservation Corps in the southeast neighborhood before being murdered in front of his house at only 19 years old. His story is tragic and remarkable, and it gives me even more appreciation for the area and for him. And now I know what this memorial is for, so I can remember him every time I pass it.

Happy anniversary of the day B and I got our taxes done like grownups and then spontaneously decided to have a Sunday Funday since it was a sunshiney holiday weekend. We chose to visit our old stomping grounds in Navy Yard and realized we wanted to house hunt across the river in Anacostia so we could live in our beloved Southeast again.
